The National Hockey League [NHL] announced today that its Board of Governors voted to approve an expansion plan for a Las Vegas, Nevada based hockey franchise. The franchise will mark the thirty-first team for the League, and the first professional sports team for Las Vegas. The team will hold its first season beginning in the fall of 2017. Following the announcement, Lieutenant Governor Hutchison issued the following statement:

"Today marks a great day for Nevadans and the NHL. As Chairman of the Nevada Commission on Tourism, it's a tremendous day for our state when we can add major league sports to our repertoire. In choosing my hometown of Las Vegas, Nevada, the NHL and the new franchise's organizers have helped to further diversify the entertainment options for Nevada's visitors and residents. The excitement shown by our communities no doubt serves as a testament to the effects the expansion will have on Nevada's tourism, job growth, and the quality of life for our residents."
